Before-After - An elegant basement, from top to bottom!

The beach house style, which consists of making your own home feel like a vacation escape through a nautical theme, is very trendy right now. Want to give it a try? Here’s what you need to know to get it right!

1. Choose the right colours

To give your decor that beach house style, opt for a clean and neutral palette. A pure white or a sandy beige, for example, allows the natural light to imitate sunny summer days year-round! To make that ocean feel come alive, you can add some green, blue and turquoise accessories.

2. Add a rustic touch

To give your home a similar look and feel as those lovely oceanfront cabins, you can cover your walls with Universal panelling. These panels can be painted either a colour that reminds you of the ocean, or even a simple white. The CANTON Eastman panels (which resemble white-washed barnwood) and CANTON Sutton panels (which resemble aged barnwood) can also both be applied to walls or ceiling for a beach house feel. Cladding that gives a « wow » factor, that is simple to install, affordable, and easy to maintain : love it!

3. Use wood and natural fibers

To create a calming and zen atmosphere, natural fibers like linen, rope, rush, cotton, bamboo, and wicker, all work really well. Integrate these materials into your decor through furnishings and accessories (rugs, pillows, drapes, baskets, etc.). As for the wood, your furniture (cabinets, tables, chairs, etc.), frames, and mirrors, are all great ways to incorporate it.

4. Use nautical-themed deco pieces

Flea markets and the classifieds are great places to uncover hidden treasures to hang on your walls. Wooden paddles, lobster cages, buoys, seashells, driftwood, surfboard or wakeboards can all be great for the beachy atmosphere you’re hoping for. To add a playful touch, some fun writing that reminds you of summer vacation – « Gone fishing » or « Life is better at the beach » - will definitely give everyone a chuckle.

5. Use sea-themed motifs

We all know that no beach house decor is complete without the famous blue-white, red-white or even yellow-white stripes. To complement these motifs, we can add other sea-themed images : fish, anchors, starfish, seashells, sailboats, sandals, seahorses, waves… anything that reminds us all of a day at the beach!
